Sitting with mom

Eric had his upper endoscopy today. They took a bunch of biopsies. They will know more in a few days after they have time to examine them under a microscope, but based on what they could see, it appears that his intestine has not had enough time to heal much.

It sounds like the doctors still want to get him started on a small amount of food, but want to give him a week or so of antibiotics to clean his gut first. Evidently bacteria can build up if you don't eat for a while and a sudden start will stir them up and scatter them into your bloodstream.

They started running some genetic tests to determine if he has a problem with his integrin proteins. One of the things these do is hold cellular structures together. They think it is possible that his intestinal walls are just washing away.

So for now the course is still set. After the antibiotics to clean his gut, we get him eating some. By then, we will have more tests in and can decide where to go from there.

Eric weighed 4.90kg this morning.
