When they put him under general anesthesia, the always hook him up to a ventilator. They usually disconnect it before he gets out of the OR, but they are going to leave him on it at least overnight this time. Since his abdomen is swollen, his breathing is really shallow and with the trauma of surgery, he could use the extra help. His swelling is starting to go down already.
His new central is double-barrelled, so they can now simutaneously deliver medicines together that prevoiusly they had to alternate. This is allowing them to put extra albumin (a protein) directly into his IV nutrition without disrupting his other stuff. This should really help him properly retain fluid so he will stay better hydrated.
